Grow lavender growing lavender indoors to feel relaxed every time you come home

Lavenders

  • Lavenders don’t just look and smell good, they are useful, too. You can cut the flowers for a vase indoors, dry them and rub off the individual florets to use as potpourri or make into scented sachets for your “frillies” drawer. Drop a bundle of lavender straw (the dried stems left over after stripping off the florets) into your pond to help clear the water if it turns green in spring.

Spring to Fall: Lavenders have it all

    • lavenders have it all. They are fashionable, scented and they attract bees. If you choose several species, you can have some plants in flower from now through to autumn. Lavenders are small and shrubby, and they don’t all have the traditional lavender flowers; some are white, pink, mauve or purple, and a few are closer to blue, but they all mix and match.
    • They are also quite versatile – you can grow them as neat edgings along a path or round flower beds, or team them with perennials near the front of a border – lavenders look fabulous with alliums, especially the large, purple, drumstick sort that are at their best now.

Plant them now, at the start of the flowering season, and you’ll enjoy a heavenly scented summer – they’ll be even better from next year onwards.

      Lavenders are easy to grow

      • Choose a well-lit location. Lavender is a Mediterranean herb, so it thrives in hot, sunny locations. Choose a spot in your garden where the plant will receive full sun for at least 8 hours a day. The spot should also be as sheltered as possible to protect the plant from wind
      • Make sure the soil has adequate drainage
      • .If necessary, you can increase the alkalinity of your soil by adding a little lime

      Uses

      • The herb is highly regarded for skin and beauty and is commonly used in fragrances and shampoos to help purify the skin
      • Lavender oil is believed to have antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties, which can help to heal minor burns and bug bites.

      Hair loss

      • Lavender is possibly effective for treating alopecia areata. This is a condition in which hair is lost from some or all areas of the body.
      • Research shows that lavender can promote hair growth by up to 44 percent after 7 months of treatment.

Which is the Best Lavender for You?

French Lavender:(Lavandula dentata) well-suited to milder climates without the scare of harsh winters, French lavenders are ornamental plants known for their needle-like, toothed leaves (hence their Latin name – dentata!). Their fragrance is lighter than the perfumy English varieties. These plants work well in fast-draining containers and rock gardens, and add a good dose of beauty when lining walkway and entry paths. They prefer full sun and gritty soil.

      Spanish Lavender

Spanish Lavender is a great choice for patios, porches, and small spaces that need to make a bold yet refined statement. Deep-purple pine cone shaped flower heads are topped with delicate lavender petals. As graceful as they are unusual, these long-lasting blooms are wonderful in cut-flower arrangements, both fresh and dried.
